Sound files

  • Jan. 5th, 2010 at 11:16 PM
I was using Adium tonight and usually have the sound turned off on my iMac [2Ghz Core Duo, running 10.4.11], but tonight I was dismayed to be listening to the alert sounds that are available for incoming or outgoing messages and such on Adium. I would like to be able to access my iMac system sound set, but don't know where to find it, or how to go about using it in Adium.

Also, are there places on the net that have system sounds for download, like you can find clipart? I had some that I got online many moons ago when I had a PPC iMac, but I don't know where I got them from, and they don't seem to work on this Intel machine.

I appreciate any help or advice.

Tree healing as a secondary spec

  • Jan. 6th, 2010 at 4:31 AM
I'm a very casual and mostly solo player, my main, a NE druid, dinged 76 yesterday and I'm finally nearing the 80 mark after more than 1,5 years of playing. I have a friend at 80, she has helped me in low level dungeons a lot and I actually haven't gone to that many dungeons with a proper group. There were three main reasons for that - I never had any RL friends of my level on the same server to group with, our server has very low population and I always levelled as dps (cat first and Moonkin from mid-60s), so everyone who asked me to join their group were expecting a healer or a tank from a druid.

The thing is, back on low levels when you can fill any role with remotely appropriate gear (which I had from the runs with my friend) I tried tanking only once and it was a disaster and I never tried it again. I think that it is the most stressful role and you have to know the instance very well. I'm not up for that. I tried healing a couple of times on lower levels and I always was a healer for my 80 friend and her pet when she ran me through the instances. I liked it but I still had the dps spec and I like my boomkin more anyway=) When the double spec option came out and I realised I did have enough money for it, I had Restoration as my secondary spec. I read up a lot on the mechanics of Tree healing and tried healing a group once, partly successfully.

Then I had to drop playing WoW for 2 months. When I came back there was the new PUG system. I started getting used to my Moonkin again and doing random dungeons. I have to say, I love the system, it's just perfect for a solo player like me who was too lazy to LFG in the chat channels and too wary of waiting in the old LFG system, considering the population on our server. I got used to the rotation, had some very successful runs with great groups, my dps is around 800-900, according to someone posting recount results, no idea whether it's good or bad for my level generally, but I felt it was ok.

Today I thought - why wait 20 minutes in the queue as dps when I have a secondary healing spec and thought it was high time to try it out. I was a bit afraid of responsibility and failure, but you learn by doing, practice makes perfect and so on, so I adjusted the Healbot settings, remembered all I've read on Tree healing (it said mostly "HoTs are your friends. Ignore HT except for the macro you should make when it makes HT an instant cast") and joined LFG as healer. A minute later I found myself healing VH, successfully. Then it was Gun'Drak and we had such a great group - the damage was great, the tank held aggro well and I got a comment that I did nice healing, so I was exceedingly pleased. Then was the double wipe in VH - honestly, the first time I had problems there, one dps was afk half the time and it reflected on our whole performance poorly and I felt responsible because I think the healer has the most responsibility and it sucks. The last healing experience of today was VH again, I seem to get it as random 2/3 of the times. We had 2 almost-but-not-quite-wipes, when I managed to heal the tank when he was just about to drop dead. On the whole it was a pleasant new experience and I want to perfect my healing along with dps.

The whole point of this narrative is to ask you about some tips on tree healing. What spells are best from your PoV? When do I use Wild Growth and Tranquility, as I never used them before? What macros do you use? What addons? (I'm pretty satisfied with HealBot right now, but haven't tried out any others)
And, more importantly, a question of gear for healing as a secondary spec. I'm sort of confused as to the difference between caster and healer gear. And when I hit 80 and start gearing up must I collect 2 sets of gear??

Home Again, with Additional Dog pictures.

I'm home.

This is the weather the dog likes: crisp, cold, weather that puts him in mind of wolfish ancestors hunting on the steppes.

Me, I put on long underwear and dozens of layers over that, and top it off with the sheepskin Uigur hat I haggled for in Xinjiang, and trudge in the snow behind him. It's frozen on top, so you crunch and rock and hunt for ruts that already exist as you walk, or you teeter-totter across the surface, half-falling at every second step. While Cabal is happy in a world filled with sharp smells and frozen rivers, and he bounces over the ice and snow with joy.

Many years ago I discovered (via the currently hiatus-bound Fabulist) Jason Webley. I posted this a link to this song, Eleven Saints, a song Jason Webley wrote and performed with Jay Thompson...

Jason was pleased, and wrote to me to say thanks, and then, a couple of years ago, introduced me in email to his friend Amanda Palmer, with whom he was working on a project, as they worked to bring the music of two conjoined twin sisters they had discovered on the internet to the world. There were two songs out on the internet by the mysterious pair for a long time, but a new song, " A Campaign of Shock and Awe", crept out today: you can hear it at http://www.myspace.com/evelynevelyn. Highly recommended, and not just because of the, y'know, family connections.

...

Right. I do not want to be disturbed tonight. Maddy and I will be beginning our New Year's catch-up by watching the first part of Doctor Who 'The End of Time'.

DivX and Macintosh HD issues

  • Jan. 5th, 2010 at 7:22 PM
I had a newer version of DivX and it was causing some problems, so I'm trying to switch to a version of DivX 6. I thought I had deleted all of DivX off of my HD, but when I try to install DivX 6 it says I can't because a newer version already exists on this volume.

I've searched my applications, and even tried using finder... I don't see any DivX 7 things...

yoga rec

  • Jan. 5th, 2010 at 7:20 PM
Hi all,

I'm looking for a yoga studio that caters more to people who are looking for a really good stretching and strengthening program than to those who are interested in meditation and spirituality. I've googled and yelped, but can't locate what I'm looking for: somewhere like this, but in the Boston area. Anyone know of such a place? Thanks.

I r can be tank nao?

  • Jan. 5th, 2010 at 5:33 PM
I've been tanking off-and-on for over a year now. When dual specs came, it became my main spec. On my Death Knight. He's been 80 since November 2008. Aside from new raids and crazy achievements like Loremaster, I've accomplished everything I want to on him.

So last week I was staring at my character selection screen, and I noticed my Druid, abandoned long ago at a pitiful level 27. Huh. Forgot about him.

Bear form has always been the most interesting to me. I'm weird like that. I gave him up because I didn't like Cat, and I don't really enjoy any casters. But that was before the new cross-realm LFG. So I dusted him off, borrowed some cash from my DK, and changed his gear and spec from a DPS focus to a tank focus. It's definitely different, which is awesome. I think I'm getting a pretty good feel for it, but I'm getting mixed reviews from my groups. Today I had 3 people saying "get aggro faster" and "stop whining." I was "whining" about the fact that the mage launched a Pyroblast before I even reached the mob, but whatever. The next group, I had two people say I was the best bear tank they've ever seen. Of course these are PUGs, so the 3 "experts" who said they had 80 druids could be just as stupid and inexperienced as the 2 who said I was fantastic.

And that's where LJ comes in. I googled, and I read. Big Bear Butt, WoWwiki, Wowhead. "Thedailydruid" won't load. Nothing I saw made me feel smarter or better prepared, or convinced me that I'm doing anything wrong so far... But of course all that stuff is aimed at level 80. I'm currently 30 and 90%.

0/21/0 is my spec. I have BoA shoulders (PVP) and chest. Four blues, two of which are random dungeon rewards. I'm shooting for stamina above all else, and then Strength or Agility. I haven't decided which I should go for more, so I'm taking the cheaper of the two if I have a choice. I have no +Int or +Spirit.

Pull with FF, Maul as my rage dump. Swipe if there's more than 3 targets (tab-target glyphed Maul if 3). Demo Roar for AP reduction. Bash casters when in range, Feral Charge - Bear if I'm too far away. As the fight goes on, I spread FF to as many targets as possible, as much for the high-threat-no-rage as for the armor reduction.

Anything I could be doing better? I'm tired of feeling like I can't hold aggro without a 15 second lead.

So! Last week I was asking advice for my healy pally. This week, I ask again.

As of.. well, a few minutes ago really, I finally got fully epic'ed out from badge gear/new instance drops, so I'm looking good. Just mainly need to change the helm and boots which are crafted epics.

If I wanted to raid, however (pugs, weekly raids, etc), would you recommend a spec change? Some of my guildee pally mains think so, I figured I'd double check what you guys thought :)

(also any advice on gems/enchants etc too, though I think i've gotten that right for the most part)

feed the soymilk need

Over Christmas, I got very addicted to Westsoy Chocolate Peppermint Stick which was, surprisingly, better than most 'real milk' chocolate milks I'd ever found.

They were selling it at Shaw's in Porter, and they all disappeared the day after Christmas. I've looked at Market Basket, and saw nothing, but if anyone else has seen this anywhere else around the area, I would really like to lay in a supply of it.

Steampunk-like Gear/Clothing in WoW

  • Jan. 5th, 2010 at 12:53 PM
Anyone know of any good in-game gear/costuming to give your character a steampunk-like look?

Obviously goggles from Engineering (or the Junior Technician goggles from Netherstorm or the Beer Goggles) will provide the goggle look, but anyone know of other costuming that's stood out in their minds as being rather steampunk-like?

(I originally posted this to [info]wowrp_nubcakes.)

I really like this concept, but man this website is ugly.

http://www.somervillelocalfirst.org/

Actually the point of this post isn't to disparage Samenfeld Consulting, but to say that I was in True Grounds this morning and was given a free Somerville Local First coupon book that has many great discounts to local independent businesses(a few are the same as the Brown School card).
